Karl delivered the Saturday London on Location workshop and reports how fabulous it was. The group met at the Southbank where they were introduced to some camera and exposure fundamentals before they set off on three compositional briefs. After a visual warm up and some beautiful light the practice was set for applications and exercises which moved photographers from an automatic reliance to decision making in both the technical and conceptual using more advanced camera operations. As they moved into evening light they had the opportunity to work with the challenging situation of low light moving into night photography. The tripods came out and it was certainly worth carrying them for the day. The group managed the diving temperatures, and the photography they produced was top notch. The “graduating” assignment shooting the London Eye looked spectacular in crisp winter night light.

Having had a day of photographing skateboarders, speeding buses and taxis, an acre of books for sale, boat traffic on the Thames, pub life and night life along the riverside, glowing indigo skies and a gorgeous urban sunset the group made their way back to the Royal Festival Hall for a hot drink and a wind up of the day’s activities.  A successful day all around and the group did an excellent job of getting concepts and the technical down to move from “guessing” work to “visualising and creating” work. Well done!

If you remember in summer 2011 we put on a series of workshops for the Roehampton Older People’s Network. There were guided photo walkabouts that took place once a month led by a retired professor of city planning and us folks at The Mango Lab. The work was to be a calendar but they changed it to a mobile community exhibition. Well, we completed the design of the project and hear that it went up in the Roehampton Public Library this week. It will remain there for the week and then begins a traveling show as it moves around to various locations and private and public venues in the Roehampton and Wandsworth area. Word has it that it is a fabulous success so congratulations to everyone who participated.

Quality control before the images get cast onto aluminum. Out of 30 prints only one had to have a redo. It’s looking fine and even the boys at the lab pinned their faves.

So they are now off for mounting. Next stop is our wall space and the m3 Exhibition.

Well we’ve been so busy with preparing the m3 exhibition that we’ve had hardly the time to provide an update. So here it is. Some images taken on the day by Julia and Emma.

Brief and workshop preparations.

A great turnout. Over 20 participants came out to enjoy a gorgeous day.

We broke into two groups and worked through some of the details.

The day was so gorgeous we just couldn’t wait to get outside.

Technical assistance and on site creative direction were par for the course.

The brief had us looking every where for a response.

really….E V E R Y W H E R E ! ! ! !

A HUGE thank you to everyone who showed and looking forward to seeing you and your guests on November 23rd. And just in case you can’t wait until then here is a brief pick of some of the image “outtakes” from the shoot … Enjoy! (Please press on an image below to start the gallery show).

Well you know the folks here at The Mango Lab are always trying to use photography in new ways. Maybe even make the head hurt a little… make your eyes sweat a bit – any one know if eyes can do that? Be horrible if they did while you were driving.

So here it is. We’re gonna give it a name… it’s trendy to do that you know… give things names with lower case and upper case letters and look Silicon Valley and the like…. So let’s call this “iSPi”. Like eye spy… but modernised…. Now there’s no app for this — well not yet anyways… but you can use your phone or DSLR, you Holga or Lomo…. whatevahhhh … just make sure it’s a camera.

Each week we’re going to post one of these iSPis and you photographers will have to find the relationship in the real world. Hey if this becomes popular we may even start giving out a prize or two.  Make sense? Well we’ll  see… Let’s get started.

For this week — should you wish to take this challenge– photograph anything that resembles the following iSPi an send it into us  – photos(at)themangolab.co.uk. We’ll post the results back here in a week. Good luck!

THE CONCEPT

Just in time for Christmas and in aid of the hard working charity Unique (http://www.rarechromo.org/html/home.asp) this is a collaborative evening where The Mango Lab invites photographers of all levels locally and internationally to take part in our annual photographic brief and exhibition entitled m3. Opening our doors alongside our neighborly artisans and crafts people of Kite Studios the entire studio complex will be rockin’ for one night and a variety of painters, potters, textile designers and photographers will have work on sale. Food, wine and music will be in the courtyard while anywhere up to 300 prospective buyers will be making their way throughout the space. Last year we exhibited 31 prints from The Saturday Club participants and sold 50%. This year we are hoping to hit a similar mark making both artists and the charity feel all warm with pre-Christmas spirit. Awww…. group hug everyone….

So pass the word on. It’s open to the public so looking forward to seeing everyone and their dog there.
